Israel Travel: Things to Know Before Your Trip

More than 4 ½ million tourists visit Israel annually in recent times. If you want to add your name to the list of satisfied travelers, it is important to prepare yourself for the best possible experience. From sites to see to the best transportation to local customs and culture, there are quite a few things you should know before your trip to Israel. These will make your stay in this unique country more enjoyable, safer, and memorable.

1 – Bring Along Electrical Plug Adapters

You will have a hard time enjoying your Israel travel experience if you cannot plug in anything. From phone chargers to your hairdryers and hair straighteners, you will need a type H plug with 220 volts to make your gadgets and tools compatible with the local power system. Just imagine how frustrating it would be to arrive at your destination and not be able to plug anything in.

2 – Prepare for Travel Security

Keep your paperwork and passport in order and on hand when you fly into Israel or travel within it. This country is well-known for its high security measures. Although this may take arrival and departure a bit longer than you are used to, it certainly gives you peace of mind knowing that the risk levels are low.

On a similar note, expect to see people in military gear with guns on the streets. This does not mean that something dangerous has happened. Military service is compulsory for both men and women in Israel, so soldiers are quite commonplace in some locations.

3 – Adjust Your Schedule for the Sabbath

Unlike much of the Western world where the weekends fall on Saturday and Sunday, you may have trouble getting services or using public transportation on Fridays and Saturdays in Israel. This cultural difference is most prominently seen in religious sectors of the large cities. Of course, you can find secular businesses open on these weekend days, too.

My work changed dramatically about 15 years ago. I used to make very richly decorated lustrous caskets inspired by Medieval reliquaries, but one day almost overnight I realized I had reached the end of the road with that work. I had had enough of colour and just stopped. I packed away all my glazes and lustres, ordered some samples of porcelain clay and started afresh. In hindsight it seems a rash thing to do but I have never regretted it.

5 – Get Ready to Spend Money

When it comes to vacation destinations around the world, Israel ranks high in the expense category. The cost of living is generally higher there than in other countries. Of course, it costs even more to visit a major city like Tel Aviv, which has recently pushed into the top 10 most expensive cities in the world. As a traveler, you will pay more for hotel accommodations, both restaurant and street food, transportation, and major attractions.

As long as you prepare yourself accordingly, Israel offers a wealth of historical, cultural, and modern experiences you will not regret. Save up enough money in advance, get your paperwork in order, and make sure to pick up a few type H plug adapters and you will enjoy your journey to this amazing destination.
